Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition where airways (bronchi) are permanently widened and damaged, leading to mucus buildup and recurrent infections.
Symptoms: Key signs include a persistent cough (often with large amounts of phlegm), shortness of breath, wheezing, and frequent lung infections.
Diagnosis: Primarily diagnosed using a High-Resolution CT (HRCT) scan of the chest. Lung function tests and sputum cultures are also common.
Treatment: Focuses on managing symptoms and infections through airway clearance techniques (to remove mucus), antibiotics (for infections), and medications like bronchodilators and mucus thinners. In severe cases, oxygen or surgery may be needed.
